Cultural Considerations

The Cultural Considerations for working with CALD Families is designed to raise awareness of the needs of people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds and to build Lutheran Care staff’s capacity to meet the needs of our CALD families.  

The workshop will cover:

  • The broad concepts of ‘culture’, cultural awareness, cultural safety, cultural humility and cultural competence
  • South Australia’s current demographics, including diversity in languages and religions
  • The immigration and re-settlement experiences with a focus on the refugee experience
  • Reflections on our own culture and how it can create bias towards people from other cultures
  • Cross-cultural communication skills and working with interpreters
  • The importance of cultural identity maintenance for the wellbeing of young people in care  and,
  • CALD specific services in South Australia that may be relevant to Lutheran Care’s CALD families.
