This week the first instalment of our new social media series ‘What’s the Word?’ was released on the Elcies Disability Care Facebook page.
The new infographic series offers explanations of what words, phrases and acronyms connected to the NDIS and disability services, including Positive Behaviour Support, mean.
Designed as a resource and reference point, ‘What’s the Word’ aims to offer support for people newly navigating the NDIS due to a recent diagnosis of themselves or someone they are supporting.
We also hope the series benefits families in the process of receiving a diagnosis, those new to working in the sector and university students studying in disability fields.
With a metaphorical mountain of phrases and acronyms that are unique to the disability sector, learning all of the new terms used can at times be overwhelming or daunting for those encountering them for the first time.
Co-designed by our Marketing and Communications and EDC teams, the series is the result of conversations with clients and non-disability sector workers. Our teams found challenges centered on the assumption people already knew what words and phrases meant, and the complex language and clinical terminology often used.
Understanding that these challenges can create barriers, particularly for people with a lower literacy level or who use English as an additional language, the series has been developed to summarise these terms and acronyms in everyday language in a set of three to four graphic tiles.
It is hoped the series will help create a basic understanding for viewers/readers that can then be built on as the words and terms explained are encountered again moving forward.
