What to watch this NAIDOC Week

Every year, NAIDOC Week shines a light on the strong and ancient cultures and many achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

One way Lutheran Care is getting involved in NAIDOC Week in the celebrations is sharing some works featuring First Nation creatives, either in front of or behind the camera.

We asked our team to suggest some of their favourite TV series or films currently available to watch on free on-demand streaming services or through paid streaming subscriptions. We’ve compiled their suggestions below!

Editor’s Picks

Little J and Big Cuz (Rated G)

For younger viewers, Little J And Big Cuz, available on SBS On Demand and ABC iview, is an animated favourite aimed at 4 to 6-year-olds. Featuring the voices of Miranda Tapsell and Deborah Mailman as the title characters, as part of a cast of vast majority First Nations voice actors, the show follows the adventures and learnings of two cousins who live in a remote community with their Nanna and Old Dog. Indigenous animation director Tony Thorne designed and directed the series and First Nations writers from around Australia contributed the storylines.

You Can’t Ask That – Indigenous (Rated PG)

This excellent Q&A show seeks to get representatives of marginalised, minority and/or misunderstood communities to answer questions from the public that they’ve always wanted to ask, but may be considered too outrageous, taboo or uncomfortable.

NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity to refer back to the episode featuring First Nations interviewees. One of the stars of the show is Danzal Baker, also known as Baker Boy, before his rap career took off.

The Last Daughter (Rated PG)

The last daughter is the true story of a young Aboriginal girl’s search for the truth, after experiencing displacement and upheaval in her childhood between the foster care system and returning to her biological family. We were fortunate enough to have a special screening of this film for our Foster Care team and several of our Foster Carers (read more here). We were excited to welcome along to the screening the documentary’s director Brenda Matthews whose powerful story features in the film, to answer questions. We are so excited it has landed on Netflix during NAIDOC Week.

Samson and Delilah (MA15+)

This stunning and sad film, but not without some sparks of joy, is directed by First Nations director Warwick Thornton. Samson (Rowan McNamara) and Delilah (Marissa Gibson) are young members of an Aboriginal community who are struggling with grief and a lack of excitement who want to escape the drudgery of their everyday lives. They decide to head to the city for an adventure, however addiction and bad luck continues to follow them and there is a tragic twist. It’s beautifully shot and with very little dialogue, is a very moving piece of art that delves into the difficult and tragic lives many First Nations people have experienced and continue to experience post-colonisation.
